Understanding Varicose Veins

Veins that are close to the surface of the skin are called superficial veins. Often visible to the eye, they may become more prominent during physical exertions, such as lifting weights. They are not deep veins and they are not paired with an artery. When superficial veins cease to function properly, blood may begin to collect in the vein causing it to become enlarged and twisted. Although varicose veins are physically unappealing, they generally do not cause long-term medical conditions; however, in some severe cases they could rupture or cause varicose ulcers. It is important to seek medical attention to assess your condition and develop the best treatment plan for you.

Symptoms of Varicose Veins

Typically, varicose veins appear on the back of the legs, frequently the lower region, but they can occur at any superficial vein. In addition to their bulbous nature, these veins may feature a purplish color. Other symptoms might include:

  • Pain
  • Swelling
  • Heaviness
  • Achiness

Causes for Varicose Veins

Common causes for varicose veins are attributed to:

  • Pregnancy
  • Constipation
  • Presence of a Tumor
  • Being Overweight or Obese

Diagnosing & Treating Varicose Veins

A physical exam along with discussing your symptoms are usually sufficient to diagnose varicose veins, but in some instances an ultrasound and/or venogram may be required to gain further insight into your condition. From there, treatment will include:

  • Lifestyle changes to manage varicose veins and to prevent more from occurring. These range from losing weight to exercising to improve your circulation.
  • Compression socks or stockings may decrease swelling and assist with enabling blood to flow more easily to your heart.
  • Minimally invasive surgery to correct the vein dysfunction and ease pain and swelling.
