Infertility is typically defined as trying to get pregnant for at least a year with no success. The time at which a woman should seek medical care for her trouble conceiving depends on her age. It is typically recommended the women up to the age of 35 try getting pregnant for at least a year before undergoing testing or treatment, between the ages of 35 and 40 they should see their doctor after around six months of trying, and at age 40 or older, they may want to begin testing or treatments right away. Testing or treatment should also begin right away if you or your partner have known fertility problems, or if you have a history of irregular or painful periods, pelvic inflammatory disease, repeated miscarriages, prior cancer treatment, or endometriosis.

There are various different issues a woman can experience that make it difficult for her to become pregnant, these can include:

  • Ovulation disorders
  • Damage to fallopian tubes
  • Endometriosis
  • Uterine conditions
  • Cervical conditions
  • Unexplained fertility

Certain risk factors can also contribute to difficulties getting pregnant, including age, smoking, weight, sexual history, and alcohol consumption. During your medical examination to address your infertility issues, your physician will address any risk factors that you make have, and advise lifestyle changes to reduce those risk factors where possible.

If you have been unable to get pregnant for a reasonable amount of time, your doctor will conduct testing to determine the cause of your infertility. These tests may include:

  • Ovulation testing
  • Hysterosalpingography
  • Ovarian reserve testing
  • Other hormone testing
  • Imaging tests

In some rare situations, the testing may also include:

  • Laparoscopy
  • Genetic testing
  • Other imaging tests

There are various treatments for infertility, and the type of treatment chosen will depend on what your doctor determines is your reason for having trouble conceiving. Fertility drugs may be used to stimulate ovulation, surgery may be used to correct problems that are causing infertility, or reproductive assistance may be utilized, such as intrauterine insemination or assisted reproductive technology that involves retrieving mature eggs, fertilizing them with sperm in a lab, and then transferring them into the uterus after fertilization.
